Hereditary Cancer Genetic Testing

Being proactive with your health is important for you and your family. Screening for hereditary cancers is one aspect of preventative medicine slowly becoming incorporated into clinics around the world, but it still has a way to go. Knowing your hereditary cancer risk can save your life, your siblings' lives, and your children's lives by allowing you to take preventative action and seek treatment sooner.

What We Screen For

We partner with a genetic company to screen for breast, ovarian, colorectal, endometrial, melanoma, pancreatic, gastric, and prostate cancers. This 72-gene panel includes the commonly known BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, in addition to screening for Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis, genetic variants associated with colon cancer.

*Insured patients can bill their insurance for the genetic test
**Cash pay or uninsured patients can purchase a similar genetic test at reduced cost if they meet NCCN guidelines.

Our Role

We do not simply hand you a test. Our role is to review your personal and family history, determine whether testing is appropriate, place the order, and interpret your results with you during a consultation. Genetic information is only as valuable as the guidance that comes with it, and we walk through what your results mean for you and for the family members who share your genes.

How Billing Works

At Metta Wellness NW, we do not accept insurance for visits. The consultation is a cash-pay visit of $200, and these are HSA-eligible services.

Genetic testing itself is billed directly by the laboratory. Coverage is not guaranteed and depends on factors such as your personal and family history.

  • Insured patients can bill their insurance for the genetic test.

  • Cash-pay or uninsured patients can purchase a similar genetic test at reduced cost if they meet NCCN guidelines.

Steps to Proceed

  1. Submit payment for your consultation through the secure link provided in your referral email.

  2. Once payment is received, we follow up with your intake forms and next steps.

  3. Complete your consultation, during which we review your history and place the appropriate testing order.

  4. Receive and review your results together during a follow-up consultation.

Common Questions

Who is a good candidate for testing? Anyone with a personal or family history of the cancers listed above, an early-age cancer diagnosis in the family, or a known familial mutation. We review your history to help determine whether testing is right for you.

How long do results take? Turnaround varies by the laboratory and test ordered. We will give you an expected timeframe at your consultation.

What happens if a variant is found? A positive result does not mean you will develop cancer. It means we can build a preventative plan together, which may include earlier or more frequent screening, referrals, and guidance for family members who may wish to be tested.

Is my genetic information protected? Yes. Federal law under GINA (the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act) prohibits health insurers and employers from using your genetic information against you.
